The Peabody Skating Club has been teaching figure skating and basic skating skills to young children and teens for many years. Founded in 1974 by Sally Larkin-Bettencourt, we are a member in good standing with Learn To Skate USA. Children of all skill level, even those who have never worn skates are
encouraged to participate! Our instructors have years of experience helping beginning and advanced skaters, and many
skated competitively. We are a Learn To Skate USA Badge program, so your
children will be able to work towards badges and become U.S. Figure Skating members!
Unlike most programs in the area, we offer a full 50 minutes of
instruction! Other programs offer 50 minute classes, but
only provide instruction for 20-25 minutes, and then use the
rest of the time as a "free skate" period, with no
instruction provided. This means that with the Peabody
Skating Club, your children will receive the most
instruction for your money and will learn more with each class! Additionally, instead of teaching
students to push milk crates around the ice, all our students learn
how to skate on their own, without support. This teaches
them the correct fundamentals of skating from the very beginning.
Classes are at the McVann-O'Keefe
Skating Rink in Peabody, MA on Monday nights from
5:15-6:05pm and 6:15-7:05pm. Remember that's 50 minutes of instruction!
Your child will learn skills such as backwards skating,
turns, stops, and jumps. We keep our classes small in order
to give your child the attention they need. The Peabody
Skating Club has always and will always maintain a policy of
nondiscrimination. Our program culminates in a free spectacular skating show featuring each class as well as local competitive figure skaters.
Hockey Skating Skills Classes:
We also have a
hockey fundamentals class for children who want to learn the basics of
skating in order to play hockey. Note these classes are
dependent on enrollment. This curriculum is designed to teach the
basics of recreational and hockey skating and how to successfully
maneuver on the ice. In the fundamentals class, all elements will be
taught without a stick or puck, as the focus of the class is on
proper skating techniques, not on the game of hockey itself. For these classes, hockey skates are required. The
fundamentals class will run in the 5:15-6:05 hour. Skaters must have passed Basic 2 to enroll in Hockey Skating Skills.
We look forward to teaching your child!
